Teamwork is nothing new for star athletes and women’s basketball champions Diana Taurasi and Penny Taylor. The couple, who have their second child on the way, collaborated to create a neutral, calming space for baby that’s grounded in sustainability and conscious living. The goal? To design a nursery that's a joyful, contemporary oasis, serving as an extension of their lifestyle.

In alignment with Taylor and Taurasi’s vegan lifestyle, the pair chose design elements that fit their planet- and animal-conscious mindsets. Utilizing a selection of low emission GREENGUARD Gold Certified furniture and non-animal derived materials is what makes this particular space a standout. “Especially since we've had children, we feel like it's a simple and easy decision to make to not use animal products. Pottery Barn Kids ticks all the boxes that are important to us with not only beautiful, quality products but also a wide array of non-toxic options,” said Taylor.

“We are beginning to help our son understand our choices and it’s as simple as wanting to do as little harm as possible,” Taylor continued. “To us, it is really important to raise our children with that consciousness in mind—of making the right choices that we believe are important for the future.” Taurasi added, “You’re not sacrificing anything; you’re only helping. You can have a beautiful nursery by making great, healthy choices.”

Having already designed a nursery for their toddler son, Leo, the couple knew exactly what sort of items were on their wish list for baby number two. The space needed to be comfortable for the entire family, functional and fun. “Being our second child, we understand how much time you spend in the nursery, and we wanted it to work for all of us, including Leo,” said Taylor. For both women, a comfortable seating option was essential, so they went with the Modern Wingback Swivel Glider & Manual Recliner.

The Avalon daybed is admittedly Taylor’s most-loved item. “My favorite piece in the room is the daybed! After 20 years of professional basketball, our bodies have many ongoing aches and pains, and sometimes laying down is the only relief. It’s especially important as a place to comfortably breastfeed,” she said. The area also doubles as a reading nook where they can relax with little Leo for story time. “This daybed is the stuff dreams are made of because we can spend so much time here as a family,” said Taylor.

As for the family's little book nook in the new nursery, Taurasi appreciates how the Acrylic Wall Shelves assisted with kid-friendly viewing and transformed her son's book collection into added pieces of art. “I think that wall is going to be special for him. He's going to be able to take charge of what books we're going to read,” she said. Another item the two have quickly come to love is the West Elm X PBK Mid-Century Extra Wide Dresser & Topper Set. “My favorite already is the changing table. There's something to be said about it being neat and organized. The easy-to-get-to drawer space and the Mid-Century feel, I love it,” said Taurasi.

The pink, desert-inspired colors add joy and warmth to the clean, minimal space. Their unique color palette was inspired by an art piece created by a local Phoenix artist named Whitney Schlander. “We didn't want to do pink because pink is so classic little girl, but there's a reason why. It feels really nice in here,” said Taurasi. “It feels amazing to know when she gets here, we'll be ready. The minute she gets home, she's going to have everything ready to go. [It will] hopefully make her first couple of nights here—and years—just a dream come true because that's really what this room is to us,” Taylor gushed.
